KEC policies

Spring break policy

In alignment with Kanien’keha:ka customs, and worldview, Kakwi’tene Nikahawi is a time for rejuvenation, cleansing and renewal. It is the time to give thanks to Wahta (The Maple) which is the leader of our tree life. They provide us with the first signs of spring and the maple water is the first food to cleanse us from the winter season. These customs and worldviews are in direct relation to our physical and mental health and are fundamental components to our wholistic wellness.

For the Kanien’keha:ka, Ka’nikonhri:io (Good Mind) the foundation of Kaiennare’ko:wa (The Great Law of Peace) exemplifies and guides the principles of wholistic wellness through the recognition of the interconnections of our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, collective and environmental health.

Kanehsatà:ke Tsi Ionthiatonhseraweienhstáhkhwa (KEC) recognizes and values the importance of fostering a healthy work environment and taking the time to make space for wellness. This policy provides an opportunity for employees and students to engage in restorative activities that honor personal, family and community wellbeing. It promotes the idea that taking time for wellness, enriches the lives of its employees and enhances their ability to better support students upon their return from KE break.

Post-Secondary Funding Policy

The Kanehsatà:ke Education Center (KEC) is responsible for the proper and fair distribution of Post-Secondary Student Funding. This policy will be used to ensure the services and funding are provided to eligible students keeping in mind financial constraints. Indigenous Services Canada provides post-secondary education support to eligible participants through the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) and the University and College Entrance Preparation Program (UCEP). The Post Secondary Support Program provides funding and services for students to attend accredited postsecondary institutions (colleges and universities) and is a means for

accessing funds as a supplement to a student’s existing resources. This policy will be reviewed no less than every four (4) years.

The Kanehsatà:ke Education Center (KEC) is supportive of our students who wish to pursue a post- secondary education. The KEC is required to follow their eligibility guidelines, policies, and reporting requirements. However, if and when possible KEC also has the flexibility to adjust its policies according to the community’s needs. The KEC will provide information, manage resources and implement administrative procedures for the achievement of these programs. Of important note, the ISC PSE funding formula for student benefits has been frozen for the last thirty (30) years. The tuition costs that we receive from Quebec Post- Secondary institutions (CEGEP and university) has far exceeded the amounts provided during this time.
