About us

a long history in education

Our history

Education has been a cornerstone of the Kanehsatà:ke community for generations. In 1976, we took a pivotal step forward with the opening of our first elementary school, welcoming students from Nursery to Grade 6. This marked the beginning of a journey driven by growth, self-determination, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning.

By 1988, the community took another transformative step. A Band Council Resolution (BCR) empowered the Interim Kanehsatà:ke Board of Education to begin formal negotiations with the Department of Indian Affairs. The goal: to reclaim control of our education system. From those efforts, the Kanehsatà:ke Education Center was born. More than 30 years later, the Kanehsatà:ke Education Center continues to be a vital force in our community. Today, we are proud to support two schools.
